Banned Books Week
September 26 - October 3, 2009 we observe Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to express one’s opinion and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those viewpoints to be read by all who wish to. In 2008, the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom received a total of 420 challenges. We have freedoms that other cultures don’t have. If we want to read a book, it is possible and encouraged. If we want to comment on a book, that is possible and encouraged. We celebrate banned books week because of these freedoms.
